NEW HAVEN, CT – On the final day of the 2024 regular season, the Pace University baseball team managed to sweep Southern Connecticut State University to take the series win, 2-1. With the series victory, the Blue and Gold captured the 2024 Southwest division title in the Northeast-10.
In the twin-bill, the Setters won game one, 6-2; and took game two, 5-4, after needing extra innings and two home runs from Dominic Rivara. At the conclusion of the 2024 regular season, Pace is 27-17 overall, and 17-10 in the conference. The Setters finished the regular season with 17 conference wins for the first time since 2019.
Game One
The Setters managed to prevail in game one, 6-2, behind their impressive hitting at the top of the batting order. On their final day of the regular season, Pace made a statement at the plate knocking 13 base hits in game one.
After the Owls tallied the contest's first run in the second inning, the Blue and Gold took control in the third. Brayden Sweppenhiser grooved a double to tie the game at one. Then, Matthew Rinaldi followed up with a single to left field putting Pace ahead 2-1.
Two innings later the Setters added more to the board bringing home three runs in the fifth. Anthony Labita drove in two runs after lining a double into the left-field gap. Dylan Koch then added another run to Pace's total with an infield single and moving into the sixth the Setters led, 5-1.
Pace's final run of the contest came off a Josh Miller single in the top of the sixth. Southern Connecticut State managed one run in the seventh, but the Setters held on to capture game one by a final score of 6-2.
On the mound, Ryan Degnan earned his fourth win of the year going five total innings yielding just one hit and one run.
The top three hitters for Pace did most of the damage at the plate in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader.Rinaldi (3-for-4, 1 RBI),Labita (1-for-5, 2 RBIs) Miller (3-for-5, 1 RBI)all had productive games at the dish.
Game Two (10 innings)
The second game of the doubleheader presented a much closer contest between the Setters and Owls. The back-and-forth affair needed extra innings in order to decide a winner.
Southern Connecticut State struck first in the third inning to take the early upper hand 1-0. The Blue and Gold answered in the top half of the fourth after George Provel sliced a single up the middle.
The seesaw battlecontinued in the next half-inning as the Owls jumped ahead 2-1. Pace responded in the top of the fifth scoring three runs off a three-run blast off the bat of Dominic Rivara. The go-ahead home run marked the freshman's first of his collegiatecareer. After the fifth, Pace held a 4-2 advantage.
The Owls would not stay away, and they tallied two runs in the seventh to tie the game at 4-4, a score that remained until the game moved to extra innings. In the top of the tenth inning, Rivara came up clutch for the Setters and knocked the second home run of his career to give Pace a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the tenth.
The Setters held on to the 5-4lead to secure the series win and their division title. On the mound, Anthony Apollaro finished his four-inning outing with a save out of the bullpen.
After taking over in the seventh, Apollaro shut down the Owls holding them to one hit and no runs in the final four innings. Vincent Vartolone had a solid start for Pace pitching four innings allowing one earned run while striking out five batters.
The two home-run performance from Rivara marks Pace's second of the season, both of which came off the bats of freshmen. Rivara went 2-for-4 in the contest, driving home four of Pace's five runs. His brother, Luke Rivara also had two base knocks and a run scored. Six different Setters tallied a hit in game two.
